How to Craft Perfect Prompts Using the PACT Framework
Persona, Action, Context, Tone — The Secret Sauce to Powerful AI Outputs
If you’ve ever asked ChatGPT a question and got a “meh” answer, you’re not alone. The secret to unlocking high-quality AI responses isn’t just in the tool you’re using — it’s in the prompt you write. That’s where the PACT Framework comes in.
PACT stands for Persona, Action, Context, and Tone, and it’s the simplest way to write prompts that consistently deliver better, more tailored, and often mind-blowingly good results.
Let’s break it down.
1. Persona: Who Is the AI?
Start by defining who the AI should act like. This immediately shapes the answer’s depth, tone, and authority.
Explain climate change.
-> You are a climate scientist giving a TED Talk. Explain climate change to a high school audience.
Think: Should the AI be a friendly coach? A senior developer? A sarcastic stand-up comic? This changes everything.
2. Action: What Do You Want?
Clearly tell the AI what to do. Be specific.
Tell me about marketing.
Give me 5 creative social media hooks for a new skincare brand targeting Gen Z.
AI isn’t a mind reader. If you want a list, a comparison, a summary, or a debate — say so.
3. Context: Why or Where Is This Being Used?
Set the scene. A little background goes a long way in guiding the model’s response.
Write a product description.
Write a short, punchy product description for an eco-friendly water bottle being sold on Instagram.
The more relevant the context, the more aligned the answer will be to your goals.
4. Tone: How Should It Sound?
Do you want the response to sound professional? Casual? Witty? Emotional?
Write an email to my boss.
Write a polite but assertive email to my manager explaining why I need an extra 2 days to finish the report.
Tone matters. It’s the difference between sounding robotic and sounding real.
Putting It All Together: The PACT Prompt Formula
Here’s how you can combine all four elements:
You are a seasoned career coach (Persona). Write a LinkedIn post (Action) for someone who just got laid off and wants to share the news with empathy and optimism (Context) using a warm, human tone (Tone).
Now that’s a chef’s kiss prompt.
Why PACT Works
AI models, especially large language models like GPT-4, thrive on clarity. The more direction you give, the more accurate and nuanced the responses. PACT gives you structure without overcomplication.
Whether you’re writing copy, drafting emails, building products, or just having fun with AI — PACT helps you speak the model’s language.
Try It This Week
Pick something you need — like an email, a blog intro, or a tagline — and apply the PACT method. You’ll be surprised how much more human the AI sounds.
Bonus Prompt:
Act as a creative director at a fashion startup. Create a launch announcement tweet for a gender-neutral, eco-conscious sneaker line, with a Gen-Z playful tone.
Notice how Persona, Action, Context, and Tone all show up? That’s PACT in action.
